CASE STUDY: AIRDRIE UNITED FC
With 4 weeks to go to the start of Season 2002-2003 Glasgow Businessman Jim Ballantyne finalised the deal to bring professional football back to the Lanarkshire town of Airdrie. With the media interest filling the back pages at the expense of Rangers and Celtic the new club had one last hurdle to face. What were the players going to wear? Ballantyne called in Grail Sportswear to save the day.
With most manufacturers unable to produce a drawing of the strip in the timescale Grail Sportswear faced what looked like an impossible task.
A home strip based on the traditional Airdrie red and white diamond design and an all new red and black away strip were designed and samples produced for approval by both the club and the Scottish Football League. Following approval the strips were produced and Grail organised the official League numbers and badges to be put on.
With 18 hours to go to the press launch of the new strip a jersey sponsorship deal was secured and with it another seemingly impossible challenge. Could the new sponsors logo be printed on the strips before the press conference? As with all areas of Grails business the challenge was met head on. As the Scottish media gathered at New Broomfield the freshly printed jerseys were rushed from Glasgow to arrive just in time.
The new strips were welcomed by both players and fans and both home and away kits have been described by many as the most attractive strips in Scottish football.
